A Bull In New York City

A Unique Gift To New York City
If you're ever in New York City, be sure to take a walk down Bowling Green Plaza to see the famous Wall Street Bull. This statue stands bold and proud, ready to charge down the streets of the financial capital of the world. Artist Arturo Di Modica created this awesome sculpture and presented it to the people of New York City as a gift, after the stock market crash of 1987. He had faith that the economy would change and was inspired to offer this gift as a representation of "strength and power" of the American people.
A Generous Gift
Di Modica took it upon himself to fund his project which cost about $360.000.00. The bull is made of bronze and weighs in at approximately 7,000 pounds. This generous artist installed the sculpture on December 15, 1989 in front of the New York Stock Exchange as a Christmas gift to the people of New York City. Since it was not commissioned by New York City as public art, the bull was seized and impounded by the police. New Yorkers soon gathered together letting it be known that they wanted their gift back. In response to this outcry, New York City Department of Parks and Recreation re-installed the bull in it's present home at Bowling Green Plaza, near Wall Street and Bowling Green Park.
A Famous Tourist Attraction
The Wall Street Bull has become a famous attraction to tourist from all over the world. If you visit this sculpture, you'll most likely be one of many viewing and photographing this incredible work of art. During business hours, the plaza will be congested with business men and women walking up and down the street, passing the familiar sculpture as they move on with their work day. Visiting this bull in the business district of New York City will be a New York experience you'll never forget. You'll experience the heart and culture of this city that makes New York City what it is.

Very nice and informative. Occasionally I do visit New York, I will have to put this on the list and get a few photos. Very nice hub.
It will be fun to have this info in my back pocket for just the right moment in a conversation. :) Interesting bit of history--thanks!
Interesting hub - wow what an expensive piece of art - but it really fits the area where it stands. Thanks for sharing!
I would love to visit NYC again. Thanks for the informative hub.
I have been to that bull before and I have touched the golden balls! So funny. Great Hub.
Hi, what a great statue! that's not something you would see every day! lol we have a very strange statue in London, it's a horses head! the funny thing is that it is standing on it's nose! Oh forgot to mention that its green! or is it blue? can't remember! ha ha
For some reason, I thought this bull had been around much longer than it has! Very interesting. We had seen this on TV so much and we were happy to see it this year on our trip to NY!
Nice story and quite a powerful workof art.
Thank you fo the funny story about the police impounding the Bull. I don't think I have seen it in person. I enjoyed your Hub and the accompanying photograph. Well done!

Of course since I am a native New Yorker still here in the city, I had no idea of the history. But I do know the bull well, even worked in the area and visited many times.
The interesting thing is that most tourist will take a picture but it is not of the front of the bull or the side - but of the rear - which is huge...and anatomically correct.
It is a grand sculpture. Thanks for the hub!
