How To Make A Delicious Holiday Turkey

Updated on May 1, 2014

Recipe For A Turkey You'll Never Forget

With the holidays approaching, I'd like to share a recipe for a moist, tasty and succulent turkey. This is a recipe that was used for years by my godmother. She was from South Carolina and was one of the greatest cooks I ever knew.  All of her meat dishes were moist, delicious and tender.

I can remember going to my godmothers house almost every Sunday, as a little girl with my family after church for a delicious dinner. As soon as we entered her house, we would smell the aroma of her well seasoned chicken or turkey. We all couldn't wait to sit at her table and dig in.

Years later, when I was a teenager, my mother asked my godmother to tell her the secret for her delicious meat. She finally revealed her secret ingredients. I never forgot what she said and vowed that I would cook my meat the same way some day.

All of my children and my husband love it when I make turkey or chicken this way. So, I'll share this recipe with the world because it's too delicious to keep to myself!

This recipe does not use stuffing inside of the turkey, I make my stuffing separately and will give that recipe in a separate hub.

Ingredients

  • Fresh or Thawed out Turkey
  • Apple Cider Vinegar or Fresh Lemon
  • Old Bay Seasoning
  • Bell's Poultry Seasoning
  • Lowry's Seasoned Salt
  • Unsalted Real Butter
  • Fresh Onions
  • Fresh Carrots
  • College In Chicken Broth
  • Sugar
  • Fresh Parsley For Garnishing

Wash That Bird

  • Remove the packaged organs from inside of your turkey and then rinse your turkey thoroughly with cool water.
  • Next wash your turkey with either the apple cider vinegar or lemon. The acid in the apple cider vinegar or lemon actually will help the seasonings to marinate more thoroughly in the turkey resulting in a great taste.
  • Rinse the apple cider vinegar or lemon off with tepid water.

It's Seasoning Time

This is my favorite part:

  • Sprinkle a generous amount of old bay seasoning all over your turkey and massage it in well. Sprinkle some inside of the cavity of the turkey also.
  • Sprinkle a generous amount of the bells poultry seasoning all over your turkey and massage in well. Sprinkle some inside of the cavity of the turkey also.
  • Sprinkle a lesser amount of the seasoning salt all over the turkey with some inside of the cavity too.
  • Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling the turkey for health safety.
  • Place the bird in a roaster and pour 2 - 3 cans of the college inn chicken broth around the turkey, don't pour it directly in on the turkey because you'll wash off a lot of the seasoning.

Slice And Add Those Vegetables

  • Slice your onions
  • Cut up your carrots or you can use whole baby carrote

Add the sliced onions and the cut up carrots or whole baby carrots to the broth all around the turkey. Yumm!

Butter Up!

  • Slice up a stick of butter and then put some of the butter inside the cavity of the turkey, some on top of the turkey and the rest in the broth around the turkey.

Sprinkle That Sugar

  • Sprinkle a generous amount of sugar all over the turkey - this caramelizes the turkey as it is roasting, gives it a beautiful color and a flavor that is out of this world.

Time To Roast

  • Preheat your over to 325 degrees
  • Make sure to roast your turkey thoroughly according to the manufacturers instructions for health safety.
  • Cover your turkey with either the top to the roasting pan or with aluminum foil.
  • Baste Your Turkey Frequently while it is roasting, this will ensure that it is moist and tasty.
  • You can also add more seasoning on top of it while it is roasting and a little more sugar on top of it towards the end for even more flavor.
  • Roast the turkey for the recommended amount of time according to the weight of the turkey on the packaging.
  • For the last 20 minutes of roasting remove the top cover or foil so that the turkey can brown.

Almost Ready To Digg In

  • After your turkey is thoroughly roasted, remove it from the oven and allow it to settle for a while.
  • Then carefully remove your turkey (this is the hard part) and place it a serving tray.
  • Spoon out the vegetable and place around the turkey,
  • Drizzle some of the broth over the turkey and garnish with some fresh parsley.

Happy Eating!
